A Lexicographer's business is solely to collect, arrange, and define the words that usage presents to his hands. He has no right to proscribe words; he is to present them as they are.
Noah Webster, lexicographer (1758-1843)

Welcome traveller to GLUEDOG, the Greater Laran Unabridged Encyclopaedia & Dictionary Of Gor, a compendium of definitions and terms used in and around Gorean millieux. Because Our purpose is to inform and not to judge, We have taken the somewhat radical step of including not only terms from the 26 Scrolls, John Norman's magnum opus The Chronicles of Counter-Earth, but also commonly-used IRCisms that We clearly MARK as originating in the on-line world of IRC/Chat-Room Gor.

We feel that those terms have a place in GLUEDOG, if only to be able to allow you to quickly look the term up, point to it, and say, Hey, those people over in Lara say that 'karta' is an IRCism! In keeping with Our nature, however, We have also included several Oryxisms, words created by Oryx con Lara, proprietor and Owner of the-Lara-inn, so that should you stop by and visit, you'll be able to understand His odd patois.

Rather than listing everything as a "(noun)" with the occasional (verb) thrown in, as has been done in the past, We decided to be a bit more liberal in the "part of speech" in Our definitions. Among the specialized usages We have defined are:

• caste • expression • location
• dance • position • holiday
• letter • weapons • raiment
• victuals • direction • measurement
• flora (plant) • time • money
• fauna (animal, including mammals, insects, fish, birds)

Most terms have at least one direct citation and quote from the Scrolls, which illustrates the term's use in context as well as justifies its inclusion as a genuine Gorean term. To view the quote(s), let your cursor hover over the “” symbol following the definitions and a little window containing the quotes will "pop up". Where there is more than one such symbol (like “” “”), each symbol will bring up a different pop-up.

NOTE: You should enable JavaScript in your browser to maximize your GLUEDOG, experience; the pop-up quotes and links depend on this.

JavaScript is not enabled!

NOTE: page numbers in the citations may vary from edition to edition. A variance of ±2 pages is not at all unusual.

Although we have done extensive research over the years on Our own, We hereby freely credit several other fine major works which We have used for either suggesting terms to be included, and/or providing the location of a quote from the Scrolls. Where the source for the term and the quote are different, this is noted. Credits are as follows:

terms and/or quotes that Oryx included in the first tLi Glossary. The original tLi Glossary was converted into HTML by Oryx, based on a text file given Him by one kaela, a lovely redsilk who has since gone from Gor. If this was, itself, based on an earlier work (perhaps the same Megera that Marcus credits), then We belatedly thank her for the use of her knowledge

Besides providing quotes from the Scrolls for most of the terms included in GLUEDOG, We have taken the radical step of including illustrative quotes from fiction that, though written in what may be termed a "Gorean Mode", was not written by the MasterScribe John Norman Himself. In addition, We have where appropriate, quoted opinions or other writings by various individuals.

Permission for use of all quotes from these individuals has been granted tLi, and all excepts from authors other than Myself, including of course the illustrative quotes from the 26 Scrolls of Gor, remain Copyright © by their original authors and the use herein is not intended in any way to abrogate or trespass on those rights.

Some of the people whose writings have been quoted herein are:

 Marcus of Ar
 The Lady Samira http://www.best.com/~skitten/samira.html
 Jake of Thentis http://phlsystems.com/gor/
 Pantheus, "The Gorean Voice" http://www.pantheus.com/TGV/archive5/TGV/discuss.shtml
Ubar Luther, "Luther's Gorean Education Scrolls" http://www.geocities.com/delphius2002

If you are an author of "Gorean Mode" works and have used Gorean terms in your writings, and would like an excerpt from your work included in GLUEDOG, please contact Oryx directly.

Of special note is the assistance provided by tressure{HMLK} in helping to find and kill an especially pernicious bug in the cross-reference code

The original GLUEDOG went online on 18-Mar-2002
